10,000 Trees

Led by team leader Joel, an IP Team in Buliisa, Uganda decided that they will plant 10,000 trees with the hope that they will buffer against the devastating effects of climate change on their community. Every Sunday afternoon, they gather, and take out the saplings to plant.

They know the trees will take many years to mature, and those who plant them may not live to see the results. But this is for their children and grandchildren, they say. This is a nursery of tree saplings that are now ready to be taken out to plant. When this set is done, they want to do another 10,000. To commemorate the visit of OMNIA's president, everyone present planted a tree.

Several countries are working on planting trees. Please see our stories on Food Forests and Greening of Taraba. This will be their contribution to the Great Green Wall project undertaken by African governments. This envisions a 1.5 km wide and 8000 kms long wall of trees from Senegal in the west coast to Djibouti the east coast of Africa, with the hope of combating desertification and improving livelihoods.
